This month’s Spotify playlist was so big, I thought it wouldn’t be fair to bury this Soundcloud playlist at the end of a really long blog post. If you want to read more about this playlist, you should read my post for this month’s Spotify playlist. If you just came here to follow along with some great music, dive right in!

For me, Soundcloud is a place where I post works-in-progress, and refine ideas before I release them to other platforms. For other artists, Soundcloud is their musical home base. This list is shorter than our Spotify list, but quantity is not always a great predictor of quality. There are some real gems on this list, and it’s worth every minute of a listen.

Happy new year – here’s to hope for 2021!

Works Out (Televangeles Remix) (Televangeles)

FROM THE ARTIST:
This is a remix of Works Out by Apes to Angels

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Slowed down but intense remix that highlights the original singing but lifts the song to new places with harsh and beautiful sounds.

-Dreams of Lasers

Money In My Tummy (Simulated Youth)

FROM THE ARTIST:
Combo of dark house buildup with bright synthpop drop to balance out the emotion of the track

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Dark and jarring, crowded-feeling. Spooky and insistent.

-popijininsky

Fighting (ft. Rielle.Life) (Dreams of Lasers)

FROM THE ARTIST:
This is a bluesy song about 2 people fighting but how love keeps them together.

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Smooth, Catchy, and full of beautiful harmony work this song feels like

Add Time (Night Spyre)

FROM THE ARTIST:
This song is reflective, with me thinking about my time and how it was spent this year.I tried to make a more ambient track out of this, and I’m relatively happy with how it turned out.

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
This track feels like the intro to a movie starring you! While listening to it I couldnt help but notice my actions and thought fall in to its simple but energetic rhythm. As each movement unfolded I was eager to hear where it would go while enjoying ever moment of what it already was!

Mis/s Erase (HANKUS)

FROM THE ARTIST:
Mis/s Erase began in June 2020 as a quick and dirty looping/mixing exercise. I released the song on IMF, and it was well received and it was featured on the Euphoria Shoegaze Podcast hosted by Archie Sagers that motivated me to expand the song further – I and completed it in December. I hope you enjoy this dreamy shoegaze tune!

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Dreamy guitar-driven rocksong. It’s swirls and swoops and glides. The washed-out vocal floats through it like honey in warm water.

An Old Stone Garden (Emmet)

FROM THE ARTIST:
Created with Spitfire BBC Symphony Orchestra, Epic Strings, and Spitfire Labs Arctic Swells.

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Soaring strings, soft melodies, and slow driving piano leaves you with an impressionist painting.

-Dreams of Lasers

Unresolved (Neon M)

FROM THE ARTIST:
Dreampop meets shoegaze with sax!

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Neon uses reverb like Expressionist painters use paint – building it up in layers and blending to create hazy and colorful moods. This song is rich and thoughtful, and just soaks in a really satisfying way.

-popijininsky

Purity777 (arpeggi.)

FROM THE ARTIST:
I’m a 14-year-old experimental artist, and I might release this as a single.

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Beautiful noise… the slowly shifting sounds will make you drift into a another dimension.

-Dreams of Lasers

Intro (VanGo)

FROM THE ARTIST:
n/a

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
If hard beats and tight flows are you thing this song will be just right for you! With a slow build intro and jamming outro, VanGo manages to fit a lot of power and dynamics throughout the track.

The Unknown (Bassic Psychos)

FROM THE ARTIST:
I’m 12 and what is this

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Pump and knock and squeeb and woaw and womp. This track gets me moving right away, and takes me on a little rollercoaster, or maybe a log flume.

-popijininsky

Rumination (5PM to Nowhere)

FROM THE ARTIST:
Winner of the 2020 OnRecord Songwriting Competition

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
It’s round-sounding, heavily swung, and bouncy – it’s full of springy sounds and syncopation. The straightforward vocals tell a story we all know – connection, affection, love.

-popijininsky

Little swing (Quiproquo)

FROM THE ARTIST:
This track is a small experimentation on happy/dancing composition with the oud

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
The Oud is a traditional Middle Eastern fretless lute. Quiproquo is a virtuoso on the oud, and this track is a lilting piece which could be the overture for a much longer composition, but stands well on its own.

-popijininsky

Playground Days (Mitch)

FROM THE ARTIST:
Just a lil chip tune thing

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Just enough glitch to keep it exciting. This 8-bit groove will have you waving your childhood game pad in the air.

-Dreams of Lasers

Unhealthy Minds (David W R Campbell)

FROM THE ARTIST:
Track about a relationship which isnt healthy for either of you. You might not want to end it but its reached its end

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Acoustic power and emotion… you can hear the rock song that this demo could and should become.

-Dreams of Lasers

Diamonds in the A (Shi Shibo)

FROM THE ARTIST:
She say I’m too pretty 💎💎💎 in my faceAtlanta my city 💎💎💎 in the A

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
This track is a jam. Atlanta rap with a trap beat that gets you moving.

-Dreams of Lasers

Wolf 369 (Momentvm)

FROM THE ARTIST:
A musical journey to one of our closest neighbours in space

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
This is spacey, for sure. It reminds me of early 1970s synth rock experimentation – Pink Floyd or Brian Eno. It gently unfolds, without me really noticing, but keeps me engaged throughout its five-and-a-half minute run. The lead synth solo around 3:15 is actual fire.

Coocoo Cafe (OK Feather)

FROM THE ARTIST:
OK Feather presents the Coocoo Cafe, sharing the cuisine loved by pigeons all over the world. It is the first song ever written by this feathery band, the one that started this whole adventure. Hoping that kids from 5 to 555 will be humming “Coocoo Cafe” next time they see an empty plastic cup on the ground.

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
The song takes you back to a smokey Paris club where a chanteuse sings a song that takes you back to an even older smokey club and you know you’ve come to the right place.

-Dreams of Lasers

Pour My Love Like Water (Gerry Wass)

FROM THE ARTIST:
A small story of rain and healing

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Raw and straight ahead rock and roll, fronted by some of the most earnest lyrics I’ve ever heard. Gerry isn’t messing around – it’s really important that you know that he’s overflowing with love. This is the kind of hope I need sometimes. Thanks Gerry.

-popijininsky

Wayfarer (FlukeyMcSwagger)

FROM THE ARTIST:
Atmospheric instrumental, inspired by Tycho, IL:LO, etc.

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Icy guitar that haunts you. Welcome 2 snare roll city, population badass.

-Dreams of Lasers

Ebb and Flow (Dammit Eugene)

FROM THE ARTIST:
Song about life push and pull. making good choices.

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Indie Rock with all the right tricks! Interesting chords on clear guitar with a vocal that cuts throught the music and leads you through catchy melodies and fun rhythms, just when you think you have the song figured out the bridge comes and mixes things up, making an already great track a true JAM!

-trex

Nebula (Mr. Chris)

FROM THE ARTIST:
This is a collab I did with DIONESIUM featuring Jason Qiu. We all worked hard on this track and I’m stoked to share it with y’all

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Slow beautiful pop music. Heartfelt singing over atmospheric guitar and smooth electronic grooves.

-Dreams of Lasers

My Wall (The Anthropophobia Project)

FROM THE ARTIST:
Song about the walls we create to save us from others and the train of thought that goes into how they are created.

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Heavy gothic lyrics over crunchy rock instrumentation that briefly opens into a wide acoustic guitar interlude, then gets back to the work of driving its point home. It drives it, it does indeed.

-popijininsky

Synaptic Synthesis (Tim Royan)

FROM THE ARTIST:
n/a

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
High energy but dark, you’ve entered the matrix and you may never return but you won’t want to.

-Dreams of Lasers

Roots (Bamboo Leaves)

FROM THE ARTIST:
This is a track inspired by world, oriental and electronic genres where I attempt to bring the acoustic and electronic together to form a cohesive blend. I include Intentional imperfections in the sound design to create a textured and lofi feel while also having punchy drums and silky synths.

REVIEWER SOUNDBITE:
Little noises make a percussive loop of water features and bamboo wind chimes. Lush synths pulse, coming forward and receding. Twiddly little arpeggios of marimba noises which are sometimes sharp and sometimes drenched in reverb. The garden is a wistful place – contemplative, hopeful.
